Sustainability & Organizational Excellence Charter
Purpose
The Sustainability and Organizational Excellence pillar exists to ensure that Asbury Grove remains a place with the long-term financial, operational, and organizational health required to sustain its mission for current and future generations. It provides long-term strategic direction so that financial planning, operational systems, leadership capacity, infrastructure support, and continuous improvement flourish as the foundation that enables every other aspect of Grove life—honoring our historic camp-meeting roots while preparing the organization to thrive for the decades ahead
Guiding Question: “What must Asbury Grove become organizationally and operationally so it can thrive for the next generation?”
Alignment with Vision and Mission
Vision: Experience the presence of God in a vibrant, Christ-centered community.
Mission: Inspire people to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ, cultivate community, and faithfully steward our heritage and resources, so that residents, guests, and future generations may be transformed by God.
This pillar is the primary means by which the Grove intentionally builds the leadership, finances, infrastructure, and organizational strength necessary to sustain the mission and enable spiritual, relational, and heritage vitality for the long term.
Scope
This pillar encompasses all efforts that shape the long-term financial, operational, and organizational health of Asbury Grove, including:
Financial planning, ways & means, and endowment development
Administration, legal compliance, and organizational systems
Communication and marketing
Operational excellence, efficiency, and continuous improvement
Resource capacity, facility condition assessment (in partnership), and organizational culture
Providing operational tools, leadership training, and administrative resources to empower committee chairs and staff in their day-to-day execution.
Assessment of financial health, operational performance, and organizational effectiveness
Alignment of sustainability and organizational priorities with Board and committee planning and resourcing
It does not own operational details of other pillars but partners closely with those areas to ensure financial, operational, and organizational health undergirds every aspect of the Grove experience.
Strategic Objectives (Multi-Year)
Articulate and implement a clear, compelling multi-year strategic plan that sets priorities, measurable goals, and developmental milestones for financial sustainability, operational excellence, organizational effectiveness, resource stewardship, and continuous improvement.
Assess, at least annually, the financial health, resource capacity, operational systems, facility conditions, and organizational culture so that planning anticipates future needs and risks.
Establish clear policies for endowment growth, capital reserve funds, and restricted gifts to safeguard long-term assets from short-term operational deficits.
Develop a unified communication and marketing strategy that clarifies the Grove's brand internally to residents and projects it externally to attract new generations of visitors and donors.
Establish and refine procedures that ensure operational excellence, efficiency, and continuous improvement among decision-making teams, staff, and volunteers.
Assess the current IT infrastructure with a view to offering guidance and direction to meet future needs.
Build intentional capacity through coaching committee chairs, staff, and volunteers so they can execute day-to-day functions effectively while advancing long-term goals.
Cultivate a culture of organizational leadership by identifying, mentoring, and empowering future leaders within the community.
Align all sustainability and organizational efforts with the spiritual purpose of the Grove so that practical stewardship strengthens, rather than distracts from, the mission.
Leadership & Governance
Pillar Leader: Responsible for owning, developing, maintaining, and refining the multi-year strategic plan; setting direction; aligning a team; establishing metrics; and partnering with the Board and related committees.
The Leader works with other Strategic Pillar Leaders, including the Steering Oversight Committee, to ensure strategy alignment and determine resource needs.
The Leader, with the Oversight Committee, reports progress to the Asbury Grove Board.
The Leader works with external partners in finance, legal, communications, marketing, and organizational development as needed
Decision-making authority for sustainability and organizational direction rests with the Pillar Leader in consultation with the Board, while day-to-day financial administration, operational execution, and committee functions remain coordinated with the Board, staff, and relevant operational teams.
